Literacy and Dyslexia Intervention
Literacy, the ability to read, is a critical skill in todays world. Education, work, and recreational activities, all rely heavily on this ability. Some children have difficulties in mastering literacy, and for these children we offer literacy intevernion.
As with any other intervention, early intervention is more effective and offers a higher chance of success.
We offer four different literacy programs, targeted at different levels of learning.
A literacy program is tailored to each child’s individual needs, depending on the age, ability and learning needs. If the child is placed for group intervention, he will be matched according to the suitability for the group of up to 3 children. The child will be place on a suitable program based on assessment results. Usually, the intervention program will cover the listed areas. However, the emphasis for each child will vary according to the learning needs and style of the child.
Pre-literacy program (can admit children in K1)
- Alphabetic knowledge and sequencing
- Print awareness
- Story appreciation and paired reading
- Phonological awareness skills: word awareness, syllable awareness, rhyme awareness, phonemic awareness
- Auditory discrimination skills for words and speech sounds
- Instruction of language for school-readiness
The Pre-literacy program is meant to prepare children for formal literacy instruction. It builds on skills, such as alphabetic knowledge, listening and language, forming the foundation on which more advanced literacy skills are built on. It also encourages children to participate in storytelling, to enable children to have positive experiences with text.
Emergent literacy program
- Phonological awareness skills: word awareness, syllable awareness, rhyme awareness and phonemic awareness
- Early sight words reading and spelling
- Introduction to phonics: blending and segmenting units of sounds to decode and spell words.
- Early reading comprehension and paired reading
- Thematic vocabulary instruction
The Emergent literacy program is suitable for children who are just starting to read and write. The program aims to equip children with the necessary phonics skill to tackle simple words, as well as to teach children to recognize high frequency words by sight, to enable comprehension of simple text.

This program is suitable for children who are able read simple text (reading age of 8 and above), and are able to apply fundamental phonics rules to read and spell unknown words. This program introduces more advanced phonics rules. There is also a heavier emphasis on reading comprehension and written expression to enable children to cope with the school curriculum.

This program is suitable for children who have already demonstrated age-appropriate literacy attainments, but need support for using written language as an effective learning tool. The emphasis of this program will be organization of information from text, note-taking, purposeful written expression (e.g. for narrative, expository or summary writing). High level phonics rules (such as morphology) may be taught to enable children to use a richer vocabulary in their writing.
