The ketogenic diet involves eating a high fat, modest protein, low carbohydrate eating configuration. Many nutrient-rich foods are sources of carbohydrates, including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. However, on a keto diet, carbs from all sources are strictly restricted. With the goal of keeping carbs below 50 grams per day, keto dieters are often seen consuming no traditional breads, cereals or grains such as rice and wheat. It is interesting to note that even traditional “healthy” foods such as fruits and vegetables are limited because they, too, contain carbs.
To understand the basics - Carbs are the main source of energy for all our bodies. With the lack of adequate carbs for energy, the body starts to break down fat into ketones. The ketones then become the primary source of fuel for the body. Ketones provide energy for our organs such as the heart, kidneys and muscles as well as everyday activities. The body also uses ketones as an alternative energy source for the brain.
The ketogenic diet is actually a partial fast for our bodies. During a total fast or starvation state, the body has no source of energy. Thus, it breaks down lean muscle mass for fuel. However, with the keto diet, the ketones provide an alternative source of energy. Unlike a full fast, the keto diet helps to maintain lean muscle mass.
The keto diet and lifestyle burns fat, reduces inflammation, reverses diseases (such as autoimmune disorders, depression, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s Disease, bipolar disorder, multiple sclerosis, dementia, Type 2 Diabetes), and prevents many diseases (such as cancer, heart disease and strokes).
The keto lifestyle also reverses and reduces allergies, acne, eczema, fibromyalgia, low testosterone levels, anxiety, arthritis, gout, kidney stones, and many more such issues.
